The piece that makes travertine worth owning rather than specifying for somebody else's building. A table top shows the cross-veining at eye level and a turned leg shows the bedding wrapping around the form, which is the argument for this material that no cheaper limestone can make.

Specification

  • Sizes: 1800×900, 2000×1000, 2400×1100 mm; seating six to eight
  • Top thickness: 20 mm on a supported frame; 30 mm where the top is cantilevered or spans without a centre rail
  • Legs: Turned solid travertine columns, panel-clad, or a steel frame clad in stone
  • Finish: Honed as standard; brushed shows the vein more, polished on request
  • Fill state: Unfilled for the look; filled and refinished for a working surface
  • Weight: Quoted with the piece — this is not a table two people carry up stairs

How this one behaves

The table in the photograph is unfilled, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a compromise. Filled travertine is darker, flatter and more uniform, which on a countertop is what a client wants. On a table the point is the stone, and an unfilled top with the bedding running across it is the version that reads as travertine rather than as a beige surface.

The structural decision is the top thickness, and it follows from the span. At 20 mm a top needs a frame or a centre rail under it. At 30 mm it can span further without one, which is what makes the cantilevered look possible. Above 30 mm the top stops being a table and starts being a slab on legs, which is a legitimate thing to want and costs accordingly.

Turned legs are the part that decides whether the piece is worth the money. A leg turned from travertine shows the bedding wrapping around the cylinder — you can read the direction of the layers in the stone from across the room, and no two legs of a set will read identically, which is exactly what a client who chose travertine wants. Panel-clad legs get there more cheaply. A steel frame clad in stone is the third answer and it is the one to specify where the floor cannot carry four concentrated point loads on a slab.

The failure mode here is not cosmetic. A top that is undersized for its span sags, and once stone has sagged it has cracked whether or not anybody can see the crack from standing height. Send the intended span with the enquiry and we will tell you the thickness it needs rather than the thickness that is easiest to quote.

Ordering and supply

25-40 working days to FOB. Furniture is scheduled around the top slab, and a set of tables shares one cutting slot rather than three. Send a plan size, a finish and a destination port and we will come back with an FOB quotation, normally within three working days.
