A commercial floor format where the maintenance cycle is the deciding factor. Filling removes almost all of the resealing obligation that an unfilled floor carries.

For a hotel floor, an office lobby or a showroom, this form exists because of one number: how often somebody has to come back with a sealer. An unfilled floor needs that visit every two to three years. A filled floor, correctly sealed at installation, generally does not need it within the life of the floor.
That is the entire argument for the extra material cost, and in a commercial context it usually wins easily. What the buyer gives up is the open-pore character — the stone looks quieter, less porous, more uniform, which is precisely the trade-off a client accepts when they choose to have it filled.
Specify matte rather than polished wherever the floor will be walked wet. Filled travertine can be polished and will look excellent, but a polished floor in an entrance is a slip risk and a maintenance complaint, and the filled material does not have the open pores to soften the slip the way the unfilled one does.
