The 20 mm tread is an interior form. Outdoors it needs 30 or 40 mm, because unfilled stone outdoors loses material to frost over time and there is no filler supporting the face.

A 20 mm tread works, and the number in the name is the honest part of the specification. It works where the run is indoors and dry: at 20 mm, unfilled, honed, on a properly rebated steel stringer.
Outdoors the same piece is not the same answer. Unfilled travertine exposed to rain and frost loses material from the face over a series of winters, and an unsupported 20 mm section over an open riser has less to lose before it goes. Thirty millimetres is the outdoor minimum and forty is better where the run is fully exposed.
The support detail matters as much as the thickness. A tread over 200 mm needs a rebate into the stringer — a lip that the back of the tread sits on — rather than simply sitting on top of the steel. Without the rebate, the tread rocks under load and eventually cracks at the front edge, and that crack will be blamed on the stone when it was a fixing detail.
Match the tread to the riser from the same lot, and ask for them together. In a filled material the match is good; it is not automatic, and a stair is exactly where a client notices.
