A wet-area cut-to-size form where the substrate carries the load. Under 15 mm the stone needs a full support rather than a partial one.

How this one behaves on site

A wet-area cut-to-size form where the substrate carries the load. Under 15 mm the stone needs a full support rather than a partial one.

The technical point that catches people out on this form is the support. A 12 mm vanity top is a legitimate product, but it is a tile sitting on a carcass, not a slab spanning a gap. Give it a full-support substrate — a marine ply or a cement board, fully supported to the underside — and it will be fine for decades. Span it across a shallow cabinet with a cut-out basin and the same piece will bow and eventually crack across the opening.

At 15 mm and above, a rebated frame is acceptable, with the rebate cut so that the underside is supported on three sides rather than two.

Fill in a bathroom, as on the tile form, because the vapour and the standing water both work their way into open pores. A vanity top is small enough that filling costs little in material and removes the maintenance argument entirely.

Cut to the cabinet, not to the wall. A vanity top that runs past the cabinet to the wall looks like it will support itself, and it will not.
