A low linear element with no load on it, so the requirement is not strength. It is that the edge wear stays acceptable over years of contact with a mower and a hedge trimmer.

How this one behaves on site

A low linear element with no load on it, so the requirement is not strength. It is that the edge wear stays acceptable over years of contact with a mower and a hedge trimmer.

Garden edging is a volume sale with a low specification, and the only thing that can go wrong in it is the two ways people hit it with a mower.

Laid flat as a single piece, an unfilled edging is the right answer and it will last. The failure mode is edging laid on edge — upright, as a kerb — which gives a mower and a strimmer a vertical arris to attack every few weeks. Laid flat, the arris is buried in the joint and there is nothing for the machine to catch.

Where an upright edge is wanted for the look, the answer is a tumbled or bullnosed profile, and it has to be a real round rather than a small arris dressed down. A 20 mm arris dressed to look round still has a corner on it, and the corner is what spalls.

Mixed tone in a garden run is not a defect and we will not grade it out for you. A run of 100 pieces with a cream-to-almond spread reads as a garden; a graded run of 100 identical pieces reads as a wall. If the client wants uniformity, this is the form where we will say honestly that travertine is the wrong material rather than pretend the grade exists.
