How this one behaves on site

A cut edge profile for a designed shadow line. The detail depends on the arris, and the arris on unfilled material is the first thing to go.

A ledge or reveal exists to cast a shadow line, and a shadow line is entirely a function of the arris staying sharp. On unfilled travertine the arris is the weakest part of the piece, because the voids run right through the edge and there is nothing filling them.

So the honest specification advice is: fill the ledge if hands are going to touch it, and if it is going to be touched by trolleys, cases or shoes, fill it and take the bullnose rather than the square arris. A square arris on unfilled stone is a detail with a service life, and the service life is shorter than anyone wants to admit at the drawing stage.

Joints matter more here than on a flat panel. A mitred ledge reads as one continuous line; a butt-jointed ledge reads as a line with a mark in it every two and a half metres. Where the run is visible from below or from eye level, mitre it. Where the ledge is at a height nobody looks at, butt joints are honest and cheaper.
