Coping at a pool is the position where unfilled travertine is simultaneously the correct choice and the hardest-wearing one, and the reasons are worth being straight about.
Unfilled is correct because coping needs grip. Pool surrounds are permanently wet and walked barefoot by people who are not concentrating on their footing. Honed or brushed gives the surface something to hold; polished gives a wet stone surface nothing, and polished at a pool edge is a safety problem rather than a maintenance one. Brushed is the specification we push.
Unfilled is also the honest one: a filled coping with a soft fill is being asked to sit in treated water indefinitely, and the fill is what fails first at a pool. If the client wants a filled coping for appearance — less common than expected — then it needs replacing sooner, not later.
The detailing is what actually determines how long it lasts. The coping must fall away from the pool so that the runoff goes to the deck, not down the pool face and into the plaster. A flat-laid coping holds a line of water at the joint, and that line of water is where the material starts to go.
Brushed, bullnosed, 30 mm, laid to fall. That combination has a service life measured in decades.
