Caps a wall, so it does two jobs at once: it sheds water off the face and it reads as the top of the wall from a distance. Both are compromised by an unfilled arris.

Specification

  • Thickness: 30 mm and 40 mm
  • Widths: 150-400 mm, cut to the wall
  • Profiles: Bullnose, weathered or drip-edge; a drip edge throws the water clear
  • Fill state: Filled recommended where the wall is exposed
  • Finish: Honed or brushed
  • Fixing: Bedded and dowelled, or mechanically fixed to the wall

How this one behaves on site

Caps a wall, so it does two jobs at once: it sheds water off the face and it reads as the top of the wall from a distance. Both are compromised by an unfilled arris.

A wall cap is a functional detail before it is an aesthetic one. It exists to stop rain running down the face of the wall — which on a stone wall means stopping it getting into the arris of the stone below — and to do that it has to shed water clear of the face.

The detail that does it is the drip edge: a groove or a change of plane on the underside of the cap that breaks the surface tension of the running water so it drops rather than tracks back onto the wall face. Without it, the wall face gets wet in a band under the cap, and a band of wet stone above a dry band is a band of algae and a band of staining.

On an unfilled cap, the arris along that underside is the weak point and the same weakness applies here as everywhere else in this material. Where the wall is fully exposed to weather, fill the cap. Where it is sheltered — an internal boundary wall, a garden wall with trees over it — unfilled and honed is fine and less expensive.

Bulknose or weathered on a garden wall for the same reason as the edging: nothing for a strimmer to catch. Drip edge on anything that sees weather from above. Those two specifications do most of the work on this form.
