Graded on void depth rather than on colour, because the void is what fails. An outdoor paver with deep open voids takes water into the face and can spall in a hard frost.

How this one behaves on site

Graded on void depth rather than on colour, because the void is what fails. An outdoor paver with deep open voids takes water into the face and can spall in a hard frost.

This is the one form where the appearance grade is the wrong question, and buyers get it wrong in a specific and expensive way. A paver that looks beautiful in the yard can be the paver that fails in the third winter, because the failure mode is the void rather than the colour.

So the grading here is on void depth, and the check is per lot rather than per stone. Ask for the frost-spall result that belongs to the lot you are buying, not a general statement that the material is frost-proof, because that general statement is not something anyone can honestly make about open travertine.

Brushed is worth specifying over honed in most outdoor positions. It adds texture to the surface, which matters where the stone gets wet, and it makes the void pattern read as deliberate grain instead of as pitting.

A note on installation rather than product: an unfilled paver is lighter than a filled one of the same size, which is an advantage for handling and a disadvantage for edge stability on a loose-laid bed. Laid on sand or on a compacted base with joints, it moves with the ground. Laid dry with tight joints on an uneven bed, the edges chip — and that chipping is the beginning of the spall.
