Cut across the bedding rather than parallel to it. The cut face carries the linear structure that makes travertine recognisable at a distance, and it is a cutting decision rather than a different quarry.

How this one behaves on site

Cut across the bedding rather than parallel to it. The cut face carries the linear structure that makes travertine recognisable at a distance, and it is a cutting decision rather than a different quarry.

Every travertine block has a bedding plane, the direction the sediment settled. Sawing across it exposes the long linear voids and the cloudy movement between them — the structure that is usually the reason anyone chose travertine rather than a limestone that is cheaper and flatter. Sawing parallel to it gives a face with almost none of that structure.

That single cutting decision changes the appearance more than anything else about the material, and it is worth stating explicitly in an enquiry, because “vein-cut” and “cross-cut” get used loosely in the trade and mean different things to different suppliers.

On site, the vein-cut face is the one that shows the void pattern, which means it is also the one that needs the most careful handling. The exposed voids are shallow but they run, and an arris edge across a run of voids chips more easily than a solid edge would. Panels in this form are best handled vertically on an A-frame with protected edges, and fixed from the back rather than from the face.

For a continuous wall, the panels must be selected as a set. Do not accept a project where vein-cut panels arrive unsorted and are fitted in whatever order the crate gives.

Ordering and supply
